(Norwegian text below) My move from Canada back to Norway, a little over a year ago, has been a strange mix of discovery, learning and challenges. #writing #work #community #literature #nonforprofit There is so much value in that, even if there is no profit whatsoever. Seven years of writing and editing before it was published, and yet I don't feel any of it was a waste or a "profit loss." Each attempt honed my craft, sharpened my sentences, taught me resilience and patience.Īnd I know the same kind of work goes in on the other side, where readers and editors and publishers spend their time and resources to bring stories and words to new readers. But it's also, in and of itself, a testimony to the slow process of knitting the pieces that make up culture. My latest published short story, Faith Journeys, touches on some these themes. The pandemic left with with an even stronger belief in the importance of cultural meeting places and networking with no other profit than connection and well-being. I spend a considerable number of hours on for-profit work to provide a roof over my head, food on the table, some savings for a rainy day.īut without the non-for-profit (or in some cases giving up some profit to be part of a literary community), I wouldn't be able to hold it together or find meaning in what I do. Work-life balance is also about the balance between profit and non-for-profit.
